Update 4/19/2013: 3D Model of Intersection
Several neighbors have suggested that it would be good to have a clearer picture of the proposed work. Neighbor Ross Jackson, of Castle Tower Graphics, has volunteered his time to create a 3D simulation that may help illustrate what the revised intersection will look like. This model shows the view heading down the hill on Cedar Ave., and is available in the downloadable .pdf below. Thanks, Ross!
Fundraising Update 4/10/2013: $12,665
Thanks to the generous contributions of more than 100 concerned families, our fundraising stands at $12,665. We are less than $2,400 away from our goal! Thank you to everybody who has contributed!
Whether you can contribute $500, or $10, no donation is too small, and we very much appreciate your generosity. Thank you!
MATCHING GIFT OFFER
A very special thanks is due to an anonymous donor who has offered to match any contribution of $500. We've already had three matched contributions, and our anonymous benefactor says: "keep them coming!"

2/23/2013: Update on discussions with the M.W.R.A.
The Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (M.W.R.A.) is planning to replace a 100-year-old pipeline in Arlington Heights. Part of this work requires ripping up a portion of Hawthorne Ave between Robbins Rd. and Park Ave - including a small part of the intersecion that the Corner Committee is planning to renovate.
Last week, The Corner Committee met with representatives of the M.W.R.A. to discuss the scope of their work, and to understand whether we might coordinate our projects to make both more efficient. A public hearing on the M.W.R.A. project was held on Thursday, February 21st, and a representative from the Corner Committee was also present at that meeting.
The conversations we had with the M.W.R.A. were very positive. Because the work planned by the M.W.R.A. involves only a small portion of the intersection (See picture below), we are confident that it makes sense for us to proceed with our planned renovation in the spring of 2013. Moreover, the M.W.R.A. has agreed to repair any damage to the streets, curbs, and plantings that may occur as a result of their work. This language is being incorporated into the plan that they will put out to bid.
We will continue to work with representatives of the M.W.R.A. throughout our project and theirs, to ensure that we maximize efficiency and achieve a positive outcome.

Briefly...
If you’ve ever driven through the intersection at Fountain Rd., and Hawthorne and Cedar Aves. – whether on your way to Ottoson Middle School, Mass Ave, or Brackett Elementary, or even if you’ve just cut through it to get to Route 2 - then you know that it is a dangerous stretch of road. The paved area is large and undefined, making it unclear to drivers who has the right of way. There are no sidewalks or crosswalks for pedestrians, and since it’s a popular meeting place for children walking to school, the intersection is a tragedy waiting to happen.
The mission of our group, the “Corner Committee,” is to fix that.
For the past two years, members of our group have been working with the Town of Arlington, the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) and over 50 concerned neighbors to create a design that will make the intersection smaller and safer. Briefly, the new design calls for reducing the size of the intersection by “bumping out” the curbs on all the streets. More information can be found in the "Detailed Plan" section of this website.

Fundraising Details
- The Town of Arlington has been very supportive of this project. However, the streets that comprise the intersection are Private Ways and the Town is not responsible for funding the renovation.
- We have identified two contractors with curbing machines, and both have provided competitive quotes. All of the work, including removing the existing asphalt from parts of the streets that are being narrowed, adding curbs, moving / adding stop signs, painting crosswalks, and doing minor re-landscaping will cost approximately $15,000.
- Donations in the form of checks made out to the the "Corner Committee" are being accepted, and can be mailed to:
